Rini LLM Student StoryRini

United States Bankruptcy Court Externship

How did you obtain this position? Brooklyn Law School gives all LL.M. students the option of having a mentor, who typically shares a practice area interest with the mentee.  I obtained this position through my mentor’s guidance. He introduced me to Prof. Gerber and then recommended me to Judge Glenn.

How would you describe your application, interview and acceptance procedure? The application procedure involved a two-stage interview and submission of a legal writing sample and resume. I had a 45-minute interview with the Judge and selection was based on my prior experience and background in corporate insolvency law.

What will your work entail? I will be drafting bench memorandums, opinions on ongoing bankruptcy and restructuring cases, doing legal research and attending the court hearings. I also hope to learn quite a bit about the Bankruptcy filing processes under Ch.7 and Ch.11.

Why did you choose this position? What are your expectations? I wanted to explore the area of bankruptcy law in the US and I was keen to learn the basics. I thought the Judicial externship would be the best way to learn the process and practice in the US. My expectation is to be an expert in the subject matter and gain as much knowledge and practical experience possible.

King & Wood Mallesons LLP Externship

How did you obtain this position? I worked for the London office as an Associate for several years before starting my LL.M, so I was introduced to the New York office by my contacts in London.

How would you describe your application, interview and acceptance procedure? Once the introduction had been made, I sent my resume to the senior partner in the New York office and we arranged for an interview to discuss the Externship and how I could help the New York office.

What will your work entail? I will be assisting various partners in the New York office on work relating to Corporate M&A, Capital Markets, Corporate Real Estate and Funds. I work Thursdays and Fridays.

Why did you choose this position? What are your expectations? I wanted to gain an insight into the similarities and differences between London and New York law firms, so that I can better advise New York based clients.

Safe Harbor Clinic

How would you describe your application, interview and acceptance procedure? I participated in the clinic information session held at Brooklyn Law School and completed the application form.

What will your work entail? I represent a client in an affirmative asylum application under the supervision of the clinic faculty, taking responsibility for all the aspects of client preparation.  This gives me the opportunity to develop lawyering and advocacy skills.

Why did you choose this position? What are your expectations? I am interested in immigration law and human rights, so the clinic is perfect for me. I am looking forward to advocating for those who are in need and who have faced human rights violations.

Thomson Reuters, General Counsel (Compliance) Externship

How did you obtain this position? The externship was advertised on the BLS careers site. I also received support from my career counselor with my application.

What will your work entail? I will be assisting in reviewing and updating existing company policies relating to anti-bribery, trade and privacy, in line with US and international laws. The role will also involve delivering relevant training to employees and reviewing contract clauses.

Why did you choose this position? I am particularly interested in anti-bribery laws, and compliance more generally, because of previous academic and employment experience. I am also eager to gain some insight into the in-house lawyer’s day-to-day responsibilities, so the position was a great fit.

Brooklyn Law Incubator and Policy Clinic (“BLIP”), Innovative Ventures

What will your work entail? BLIP assists clients with structuring license agreements, intellectual property protection, web documentation and incorporation. I will also be providing general legal advice and potentially litigation support, when necessary.

Why did you choose this position? I am interested in business law and policy, and businesses more generally, so the clinic’s work really interests me.
