Timothy Sini ’05 Elected Suffolk County District Attorney

11/08/2017

Timothy Sini ’05 was elected Suffolk County, N.Y., district attorney on Nov. 7.

Sini, a Democrat, received 62 percent of the vote in what The New York Times called a “resounding victory.” He ran against another Brooklyn Law School graduate, defense lawyer and former prosecutor Raymond Perini ’73. Sini’s campaign focused on cleaning up corruption in a county that has suffered from scandal in recent years. The election came just a few weeks after the previous district attorney was indicted on charges of witness tampering and obstruction of justice.

Sini currently serves as Suffolk County police commissioner.

“Together we have ushered in a new era of criminal justice in Suffolk County, an era of integrity, fairness, and doing the right thing,” he said in a victory speech on election night. “We are going to return the office to the honorable institution that it once was.”

In January, a Newsday article chronicled Sini’s success as Suffolk County commissioner. He joined the department in 2016 as the youngest police commissioner in the county’s history. He faced major challenges, including rebuilding public trust following the guilty plea and imprisonment of the county’s former police chief, as well as a recent spike in homicides. But Sini quickly won the support and admiration of colleagues and community members.

Sini previously worked in corporate law in Manhattan and clerked for two federal judges, then became a federal prosecutor for the Southern District of New York in 2010. There, he worked for U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, prosecuting gang-related killings and the first federal case of individuals selling bath salts, a designer drug.

Sini visited the Law School in March as part of a panel on using a J.D. in law enforcement, sponsored by the Office of Career and Professional Development. On the panel, he highlighted the demand for law school graduates in the law enforcement field.
