01.21.11 BLS President Joan G. Wexler Keynote Speaker at Central Synagogue’s Jethro Shabbat
    Joan Wexler

Brooklyn Law School President Joan G. Wexler delivered the 2011 Jethro Shabbat address at Central Synagogue on Friday evening, January 21st.

President Wexler’s talk, entitled “Informed Judgment: How does the quality of our information affect the decisions we make in daily life?” immediately followed the 6:00 pm Shabbat evening service in the Central Sanctuary. The service and program, including President Wexler’s address and a question and answer session moderated by Senior Cantor Angela Warnick Buchdahlin, was open to all.

Jethro Shabbat, named for Moses’ father-in-law, is held every year on the Sabbath during which the Torah portion named for Jethro is read. Each year when it is time to read from this section, the Central Synagogue community honors the legal profession as well as a guest speaker. Previous honorees have included New York State Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman, former Governor Mario Cuomo, former U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey, former White House Counsel Bernard Nussbaum, and Brooklyn Law School’s own Professor William Hellerstein, among other noted leaders in the legal and judiciary community.
