Jewish Legal History Seminar

This seminar will survey the periods of Jewish legal history from antiquity to the present day. For each period we shall study the major issues, literature and personalities that had an impact on the development of Jewish law. We shall also consider the way the Jewish legal system interacted with the surrounding legal and cultural environments. The course will conclude with a study of the Jewish legal system in the modern era, including its role in the State of Israel. All materials will be in English. There will be an exam option. This course satisfies the Upperclass Writing Requirement.
