Incoming 2026 Students Begin Brooklyn Law School Journey at Convocation

Brooklyn Law School officially welcomed 441 new students during its 125th Convocation ceremony at the U.S. District Courthouse for the Eastern District of New York, marking the start of their legal education journey. The incoming class is one of the strongest and most diverse in the School’s history, representing 36 states, 22 countries, and a wide range of professional and personal backgrounds. Speakers including Dean David D. Meyer, Professor Joy Kanwar, Judge Claire Kelly ’93, and alumna Nutan Vani Sewdath Dossa ’14 emphasized community, belonging, professionalism, and the lifelong support of the Brooklyn Law network.

Brooklyn Law School Appoints Three New Faculty Members

Brooklyn Law School welcomed three accomplished scholars to its nationally recognized faculty on July 1, expanding expertise in constitutional law, family law, evidence, law and technology, civil procedure, and legal ethics. Joining the faculty are Associate Professor Laura Portuondo, a constitutional law scholar focused on gender, race, religion, and reproductive justice; Assistant Professor Tomer Kenneth, whose research examines evidence, judicial decision-making, and emerging technologies; and Assistant Professor Brandi M. Lupo, whose scholarship explores civil procedure, access to justice, and institutional legitimacy. Together, they bring exceptional teaching, research, and practical experience to the classroom.

Six Faculty Members Honored with New Titles

Brooklyn Law School has recognized six faculty members with new professorships, chairs, and research scholar appointments, honoring exceptional achievement in scholarship, teaching, leadership, and service. Announced by Dean David D. Meyer, the appointments highlight nationally respected experts across constitutional law, civil rights, criminal procedure, family law, technology law, taxation, and more. The newly recognized faculty members have produced influential scholarship, earned major professional honors, and helped strengthen Brooklyn Law School’s reputation as a center for legal research and academic excellence.

Professor Jonathan Askin Honored Among Top 50 Legal Innovators in Academia for 2026

Professor Jonathan Askin, founder and director of Brooklyn Law School’s Brooklyn Law Incubator & Policy (BLIP) Clinic, has been named one of the Top 50 Legal Innovators in Academia for 2026. The honor recognizes leaders who are transforming legal education through innovation, research, and forward-looking programs. A pioneer in technology-focused experiential learning, Askin created one of the nation’s first legal clinics dedicated to technology and entrepreneurship. Today, BLIP continues to prepare students for an evolving profession, supporting startups and exploring how artificial intelligence is reshaping legal practice, business, and access to justice.

Dean David Meyer Appointed to New Five-Year Term in Unanimous, Ahead-of-Schedule Vote

Brooklyn Law School’s Board of Trustees has unanimously renewed Dean David D. Meyer’s appointment as President and Joseph Crea Dean for a new five-year term, citing the School’s remarkable progress under his leadership since 2023. The early renewal reflects momentum across key measures, including record applicant demand, stronger bar passage and employment outcomes, growing faculty distinction, and historic philanthropic support. As Brooklyn Law School approaches its 125th anniversary, the Board praised Meyer’s leadership in strengthening the School’s national profile while advancing its mission of preparing lawyers for success in a rapidly evolving profession.

Michael Crispi ’27 Wins First Place in ABA Business Law Student Writing Contest

Rising 3L Michael Crispi ’27 has earned first place in the American Bar Association Business Law Section’s prestigious Mendes Hershman Student Writing Contest, an honor recognizing excellence in business law scholarship. His award-winning article examines ESG disclosure requirements and proposes reforms to improve transparency and investor decision-making in U.S. securities regulation. A member of the Brooklyn Journal of International Law, Moot Court Honors Society, and Vis Moot Team, Crispi continues a standout law school career marked by academic achievement, advocacy success, and a growing focus on complex litigation and corporate law.

Brooklyn Law School Celebrates Back-to-Back Record Fundraising Years

Brooklyn Law School achieved a second consecutive year of record-breaking philanthropy in FY26, securing more than $9.3 million in commitments and building on the momentum of the largest gift in its history received the year before. Driven by increased alumni engagement, major gifts, and growing support for the Boldly Brooklyn campaign, the Law School has now raised more than $34 million toward its $50 million goal since 2023. Campaign investments are expanding scholarships, strengthening faculty excellence, enhancing experiential learning, and supporting campus renewal as Brooklyn Law School celebrates its 125th anniversary and looks to its future.

Centered on an updated Brooklyn Bridge-inspired design, the new identity reflects the School’s recent momentum, including record admissions demand, historic employment outcomes, growing faculty distinction, and unprecedented philanthropic support.
