A Masterful Mentor

When Kathleen and Bradley Hoffman, parents of the late Michael Simmons ’20, decided to honor their son’s memory in perpetuity with a major gift to Brooklyn Law School, they recalled his many positive stories about his mentor, Professor Michael Gerber.  With a $775,000 gift announced on Oct. 25, they created the endowed Michael Simmons and Michael Gerber Professorship as a unique professorship and a lasting tribute to faculty members like Gerber who go above and beyond as mentors.

Career Center Open house
A Career-Centric and Convenient New Space

The Career Development and Public Service Center hosted an Oct. 10 grand opening at 250 Joralemon St., making its home in a first-floor space just beyond the library that was previously occupied by the Clinics. “This marks the first time in 40 years that the Career Development Office has been located in the main Law School building and the first time in several years that the Career Development Office and Public Service Center has had office space large enough to accommodate the entire team together on campus,” Dean David D. Meyer said.

Bar Exam 87 Percent Pass Rate
Onward and Upward

Brooklyn Law graduates made major gains in passing the New York Bar Exam this summer, with 87 percent of first-time takers passing, up 9 points over the prior year, and the highest rate in a decade. The success followed a comprehensive effort by faculty, staff and generous alumni donors to provide students with educational, financial, emotional, and individual support.  “We’re just delighted with the results from our graduates, and to see that their hard work paid off,” said Associate Dean for Academic and Student Success  Karen Porter.

Saluting Our Veteran Students

Brooklyn Law School has expanded its commitment to the Yellow Ribbon Program, which will now ensure full-tuition scholarship support to veteran students who qualify for the matching program provided by the Veterans Administration. “My 1L summer, Dean Meyer reached out to me to talk about veteran’s issues, and I immediately realized that he just didn’t know how large the gap was between what the GI Bill provides and what it expects the school, via the Yellow Ribbon program, to pick up,” said Phillip Rudy ’25, president of the newly relaunched Veterans Students Association.

A Commitment to Service

The path to pursuing a J.D. for students who are military veterans is unique, and, for the three Brooklyn Law students who established the Veteran Students Association,  Phillip Rudy ’25,  Sean Godfrey ’26, and Willis Huynh ’26, the decision to attend Brooklyn Law was also partly inspired by their experiences serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, where they learned about teamwork, leadership, and the importance of giving back to others through public service.

Cyber Law Firm Launches

Gabriel Vincent Tese ’09 and Star Kashman ’23 launched Cyber Law Firm over the summer and have been generating buzz in the legal media ever since.  Tese is a longtime litigator who worked in military intelligence while Kashman worked at a firm that specialized in representing victims of cyberstalking and sexual assault and conducted in-depth research on “Google dorking” to address malicious actors.  “We’re totally virtual, and we see the future as being how well you can market yourself online, how well you can utilize technology to cut costs, and how well you can leverage technology in order to get the best results for your clients,” Tese said.
