Behind Closed Doors: Affordable Housing & Disability Rights Panel Discussion

About the Program

This panel will examine how housing conditions, affordability, accessibility, and policies affect people living with disabilities in New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) housing. The discussion will center on the experiences of residents in NYCHA housing, exposing the unique challenges faced by NYCHA residents with disabilities. The discussion will also touch on the broader challenges individuals and families face when trying to find affordable housing that is accessible.

People living with disabilities often encounter significant barriers at every stage of the housing process, from finding an affordable and accessible unit to requesting accommodations, navigating public benefits, and accessing the services they need to live safely and independently. For NYCHA residents, these challenges are compounded by situations such as delayed repairs of accessibility features, as well as instances where residence staff attempt to take advantage of tenants they perceive to be especially vulnerable.

Topics for this panel may include housing applications, recertifications, accessibility and reasonable accommodations, in-home medical and support services, housing discrimination and tenant protections, and navigating NYCHA housing for families with disabilities, among other topics.

Sponsored by Brooklyn Law School’s Disability and Civil Rights Clinic.
