Symposium in Honor of Professor Larry Solan
About the Symposium
This symposium is a celebration of the life and scholarship of Larry Solan, the 1901 Distinguished Professor of Law at Brooklyn Law School. After earning both a law degree and a Ph.D. in linguistics, Professor Solan practiced as a law firm partner while publishing numerous scholarly works in the fields of law and linguistics. His acclaimed book, The Language of Judges (The University of Chicago Press), published a year after joining Brooklyn Law School’s faculty in 1996, is widely recognized as a seminal work on linguistic theory and legal argumentation. Professor Solan’s many scholarly works have been devoted to exploring interdisciplinary issues related to law, language and psychology, especially in the areas of statutory and contractual interpretation, the attribution of liability and blame, and linguistic evidence.
Professor Solan served as Director of the Law School's Center for the Study of Law, Language and Cognition, and has been an invaluable mentor and colleague to countless scholars, practitioners, and students. The symposium will consider Professor Solan’s pathbreaking interdisciplinary scholarship.
