Brooklyn Law Named a Top School for Music Law by Billboard

For the sixth consecutive year, Brooklyn Law School has been named to Billboard magazine’s list of top music law schools, published in the July 25, 2020, print edition.

Seven alumni were named to Billboard’s list of Top Music Lawyers 2020.

  • Allen Grubman ’67 is founder and senior partner of leading entertainment law firm Grubman Indursky Shire & Meiselas. A past Alumnus of the Year, his firm’s recent clients included the Robin Hood Foundation in connection with Rise Up New York! The Robin Hood Relief Benefit for New Yorkers affected by COVID-19, and Lady Gaga, who curated Global Citizen’s One World: Together at Home virtual concert, which raised funds to support front-line health care workers and the World Health Organization. Other clients include U2, Elton John, and Madonna.
  • Paul Schindler ’71 is shareholder and senior chair of the New York entertainment and media practice at Greenberg Traurig. Schindler has handled licensing, publishing, and record deals for clients such as Jennifer Lopez, Alice Cooper, Maná, and Gary Clark Jr
  • Peter Brodsky ’90 is general counsel and executive vice president of business and legal affairs at Sony/ATV Music Publishing. Brodsky is a member of the board of the Mechanical Licensing Collective, assisting in preparations for its launch in 2021.
  • Ed Shapiro ’91 is partner and sports/music and entertainment subsector leader at Reed Smith. Shapiro’s recent work has included managing the surge in live-performance streaming deals and helping clients navigate the federal Paycheck Protection Program.
  • Nicole Giacco ’00 is senior vice president of business and legal affairs at Sony/ATV Music Publishing. She negotiated Sony/ATV’s contracts in the U.S. Latin market, including a worldwide administration deal with Maluma and a publishing agreement with Nicky Jam.
  • Jordan Bromley ’05 is partner and leader of Manatt Entertainment's transactions and finance practice at Manatt Phelps & Phillips. The firm’s priority during the Covid-19 crisis has been developing appropriate strategies for its music industry clients, such as examining force majeure clauses for its touring clients
  • Tres Williams ’05 is executive vice president of business affairs at iHeartMedia He helps negotiate all podcast deals for the company, the largest commercial podcast publisher. He also sits on the executive committee of the Radio Music License Committee, where he was lead negotiator for its recent rate case settlement with BMI.

The Law School has been noted for its entertainment law course and workshop, as well as the certificate in intellectual property, media, and information law. The Brooklyn Entertainment & Sports Law Society, one of the largest student-run organizations at the Law School, is also an invaluable source of programs and resources for students interested in careers in entertainment.
