Brooklyn Law School Receives $12 Million Gift, the Largest in Its History

This month, Brooklyn Law School received the largest single donation in its 124-year history, a $12 million gift came from the estate of alumnus Sheridan Albert '48, a legendary Court Street lawyer whose career was defined by determined advocacy, street smarts, and an unwavering commitment to improving the lives of everyday New Yorkers. Albert, who passed away in 2000, was a long-time supporter of the Law School along with his wife, Helen Scherer Albert. "This is a moment of immense pride for Brooklyn Law School," said President and Joseph Crea Dean David D. Meyer.

Four Named Professorships Established at Brooklyn Law School

A historic gift from the estate of Sheridan Albert '48 has enabled Brooklyn Law School to establish three new named professorships, strengthening the Law School’s commitment to faculty excellence, scholarly leadership, and public service. Together with a fourth professorship created through a legacy gift from the late Robert M. Kaufman '57, these appointments honor distinguished alumni while investing in faculty whose work shapes the future of legal education. In addition to Albert and Kaufman, the named professorships pay tribute to two other distinguished alumni who devoted their careers to public service: David Dinkins '56 and Herman Badillo '54.

Professor Aaron Twerski, the Irwin and Jill Cohen Professor of Law and a leading authority on products liability and tort law, was honored with the Jewish Media All-Star Award for challenging stereotypes and advancing understanding of Orthodox Jewish identity. In a widely shared acceptance speech, Twerski reflected on early career obstacles and the perseverance that shaped his nearly 40 years of teaching at Brooklyn Law School. A celebrated scholar and beloved professor, Twerski has earned numerous national accolades throughout his career.

Three New Alumni Join Brooklyn Law School’s Board of Trustees

Three exceptional alumni were recently elected to the Law School’s Board of Trustees: Meeka Bondy '94, Jeffrey T. Scott '96, and Jason Jia '11. They bring a rich mix of professional backgrounds and fresh perspectives spanning litigation, entertainment, immigration, labor and technology law. "Meeka, Jeff and Jason have already given back so much to the Law School, and we are so delighted that they have now agreed to join us on the Board,” said Board of Trustees Chair Frank Aquila '83, a partner at Sullivan & Cromwell. “Their experience and insights will help us chart the next chapter as we celebrate our 125th Anniversary."

Jonathan Lent ’26 Named Distinguished Bankruptcy Law Student by American College of Bankruptcy

The American College of Bankruptcy has selected Brooklyn Law School student Jonathan Lent '26 as the Distinguished Bankruptcy Law Student for the Second Circuit. The competitive award honors prospective leaders in the insolvency and bankruptcy profession. "When I entered law school, my primary goal was simply to do my best, keep an open mind, and see where the journey would take me. Being recognized by the American College of Bankruptcy for my achievements in law school is deeply humbling," Lent said. In addition to recognizing Lent, the award shines a light on the excellence of Brooklyn Law School’s business law program.
