Here are some safety tips to adhere to when dealing with an earth quake.
When indoors: remain inside and stay away from external doors, windows, walls or anything that can fall, such as glass, books, furniture or miscellaneous items. Take cover in a well-supported, load bearing doorway. If in bed, remain in bed and cover your head with a pillow, unless your bed posses a danger due to overhanging objects. Do not move from your safe space until the shaking stops.
If traveling in a vehicle: Stop as quickly as safety permits and stay in the vehicle. Do not attempt to stop near or under buildings, trees, overpasses or utility wires and stay inside the vehicle until the shaking stops.
If outdoors: Remain outside and stay away from windows, buildings, and utility wires. Try to find an open space away from falling objects or materials.
