At Brooklyn Law School, the "why" behind a legal career is often sparked by a single turning point—a eureka moment when the course material suddenly clicks, a mentor’s advice, or a chance meeting. Those who follow our community know that our students and alumni often have life-changing experiences that stay with them long after they leave our halls. On Giving Day, we celebrate these stories and the support that makes them possible.

In the case of Jonathan Lent ’26, a student luncheon unexpectedly led to his decision to pursue a career in bankruptcy law. Earlier this spring, he was selected as the American College of Bankruptcy’s Distinguished Bankruptcy Law Student for the Second Circuit, and joins Willkie Farr & Gallagher as a first-year associate this fall.

"When I started law school, I did not have a clear idea of what I wanted to do as a lawyer," Lent said. "By happenstance, I attended the Brooklyn Business Law Association’s bankruptcy panel, and I was hooked. They described a practice anchored around the Bankruptcy Code, but that could, in the blink of an eye, take you deep into the business of a failed retailer, an airline, or the personal affairs of an entrepreneur. It is a practice that linked business transactions, litigation and problem solving in a way I found fascinating. Having learning opportunities continue outside of the classroom transformed my Law School experience."

For Kate Larson ’26, getting involved with the Women’s Leadership Network was a pivotal move.

"Being surrounded by so many inspiring women has taught me how important it is to lift each other up and support one another throughout law school," Larson said. "The mentorship I’ve received through the Women’s Leadership Network has given me more confidence in embracing the challenges that come with this journey."

Alumna Talia Land ’25, an assistant corporation counsel at the New York City Law Department, is grateful for the assistance she received from the school’s Bar Prep program.

"Bar Prep sessions gave me a sense of community in my time when I was studying and where I would otherwise might have felt isolated," Land said. "When I felt like I needed support in my writing, I was able to be connected with a tutor, who went through my writing step by step, which was extremely helpful."
