Join Susan Herman for the 2025 I. Leo Glasser Lecture at EDNY

At 101, Judge I. Leo Glasser ’48 is still hearing cases — and inspiring the next generation of lawyers. Brooklyn Law School Professor Susan N. Herman, the inaugural Ruth Bader Ginsburg Professor of Law and President Emeritus of the American Civil Liberties Union, will honor his legacy with the 2025 I. Leo Glasser Lecture, A More Perfect Union, on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York courthouse in Brooklyn.
The lecture series is hosted by the Board of Judges of the Eastern District of New York to recognize Judge Glasser’s extraordinary career and his decades of service to the Law School and the legal community.
About Judge I. Leo Glasser ’48
Judge Glasser has been a cornerstone of the Brooklyn Law School community for more than 75 years:
- Graduated from Brooklyn Law School in 1948, where he revived the Brooklyn Law Review and served as editor-in-chief.
- Served as Dean of Brooklyn Law School from 1977 to 1981, strengthening the faculty and enhancing the Law School’s reputation.
- Appointed to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York in 1981, where he continues to serve. A courtroom at EDNY was dedicated in his honor in 2022.
About Susan Herman
Susan N. Herman is a leading constitutional scholar and longtime faculty member at Brooklyn Law School:
- Joined BLS in 1980, hired by then-Dean Glasser, and holds the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Professorship of Law.
- Served as president of the American Civil Liberties Union from 2008 to 2021.
- Author of Taking Liberties: The War on Terror and the Erosion of American Democracy (2012 Roy C. Palmer Civil Liberties Prize).
The Lecture: A More Perfect Union
Herman will explore how Judge Glasser’s example can inspire Americans to uphold the Constitution and find common ground amid today’s political polarization. The talk will welcome questions from the audience and highlight the principles of democracy and the rule of law.
