Race and Educational Inequity
The goal of this course is to introduce students to the seminal education law cases, federal, and state education policy with an emphasis on cases which illustrate the underpinnings of racial inequity in K-12 public education in the United States. Students will develop an understanding of the ways that federal and state law and policy have attempted to address racial segregation, and the ongoing debates related to race and public education. This course will spend some time addressing the racial impact of youth criminalization in school. This course will include at least two guest speakers to speak to current federal level education equity litigation and political organizing to address systemic inequity in education.
