International Trade Law
This course will introduce you to international trade law and policy. We will start by briefly exploring the history, geopolitics, economics, and critiques of international trade. We will then explore the most important institution governing trade today - the World Trade Organization (WTO) - and the crisis that it is currently facing. We will then study the legal principles of international trade and analyze the case law that has developed those principles. Our focus here will be largely on the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). We will examine potential conflicts between international trade and other societal interests, including environmental protection, public health, and national security. Finally, we will explore major challenges to the international trade order today and where the regime may be headed in the future.
