International and Foreign Law Research

In this 8 week course, students use and evaluate many print and electronic resources for international and foreign law research. Participants develop time and cost effective strategies and techniques for tackling international and foreign law research projects. Students also find and review documents of major international, regional, and supranational organizations that have lawmaking functions, such as the United Nations, the European Union and the World Trade Organization. In-class simulations include: Group research, analysis and reports on several international or foreign law hot topics. In this simulation, students assume the role of lawyers reporting to clients, corporate officers or foreign government leaders. Public international law research pertaining to issues in a Compromis (a special agreement between two nation states), followed by oral argument before a mock International Court of Justice.

Grading and Method of Evaluation:
Letter grade with pass/fail option. Students graded on the following project: legal research memo on an approved international or foreign law problem. The memo satisfies the Additional Upper Level Writing Requirement.
