Global Issues in Tort Law
This course will look at torts from an international and comparative perspective. We will broadly compare how our legal system differs from civil law systems; see how our way of dealing with personal injuries differs from the way this issue is treated in other countries; then engage in a focused exploration of particular areas of tort law, such as the duty to rescue, the liability of parents and children, defamation, and products liability. We will also look at domestic tort statutes and treaties that have a global dimension, such as the Alien Tort Statute, the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, the Anti Terrorism Act, and the Warsaw Convention. This course is offered as part of the summer study abroad program in Bologna, Itlay. The course is not offered every year.
