Directed Study in International Refugee Law
Recommended Prerequisites: International Law, Refugee Law, or Safe Harbor Clinic or other relevant experience with refugees or asylum seekers. Under the supervision of Professors Caplow and Fullerton, students will undertake legal research in International Refugee Law. Topics include internal relocation as a bar to asylum, non-refoulement as a principle of customary international law, protection pursuant to the Convention against Torture, the proper use of evidence concerning legislative facts, such as reports on conditions in a refugee's homeland. Students will prepare written analyses of their research, using both comparative and international law perspectives. Students will also provide oral presentations of legal research pertinent to individual cases supervised by the Hong Kong Refugee Advice Centre in bi-weekly skype calls. Enrollment is limited and the instructors' permission is required. Grading and Method of Evaluation: Pass/fail only. This course does not satisfy the upper class writing requirement.
