Comparative Legislation

This course will examine the various ways that governments legislate and their different approaches to statutory interpretation. The course will compare the common law approaches to statutory interpretation in the United States and the UK with the civil law approaches of continental Europe. There will be some discussion of the special problems that result from bilingual legal systems like those in Canada and Belgium, and problems in the interpretation of European Union directives. This course is offered as part of our Summer Abroad Program.
