Clinic - Sports Law Externship Fieldwork

In this externship course, students work 12-14 hours a week in law firms and in-house legal departments that handle matters that involve any level of sport, or serve the clients, businesses and properties that operate in partnership with the sports industry. Faculty assists with identifying placements and matching students to those placements, but students who find their own externships in the industry may also enroll in the course with permission. Students work under the close supervision of an attorney at the placement site. The nature of the legal work will differ from site to site, and may be advisory, litigation, transactional, or policy-oriented, with all settings requiring some substantive research and writing. Priority will be given to students who have taken Sports Law, or have prior coursework or practical experience in Labor, Employment, Antitrust, Copyright, Trademarks, and Right of Publicity. Students receive 3 credits for the fieldwork and 1 credit for a required seminar. Grading and Method of Evaluation: High Pass-Pass-Low Pass-No Credit.
