Clinic - Family Defense: Brooklyn Defender Services

Each year, NYC's family regulation system separates thousands of families by accusing parents of abusing and neglecting their children. Most of these cases involve allegations of neglect that are directly related to poverty brought against parents from the most marginalized Black and brown communities. Students taking this hybrid externship clinic will work directly with attorneys at Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) representing parents in Brooklyn Family Court. Students will help BDS protect parents' rights and defend against the surveillance and unnecessary separation of these families. Students will participate in all aspects of client representation, including interviewing clients, preparing client affidavits, drafting motions and pleadings, researching legal issues, and helping attorneys prepare for hearings by reviewing records, interviewing witnesses and drafting examinations.
