Clinic-Deportation&Defense:NYLAG Clinic

The Deportation Defense Externship Clinic will give students the opportunity to litigate a defensive asylum case under the supervision of NYLAG staff. Students will represent an individual who is seeking asylum in removal (deportation proceedings) to interview them and prepare their statement and related filings, conduct legal and factual research, draft a brief, and argue an asylum hearing, including a direct and closing. While the classes will be conducted at Brooklyn Law School, client work will be conducted at NYLAG's offices. Last year's students litigated two asylum cases for transgender women from Mexico, both of whom had endured persecution in their home countries. They prepared the evidence packets, worked directly with clients to prepare statements, researched, and authored a brief, and argued the case in immigration court, all done over the course of a semester.
