Civil Externship Seminar - Transactional Practice

Prerequisites: 1L course of study This course is the companion seminar for students enrolled in the Civil Practice Externship fieldwork course with placements in law offices that will assign them primarily transactional work. The seminar provides a foundation for understanding how business works and the real world context in which legal issues arise for the business client. The seminar provides a business education in: basic accounting principles, how to read a financial statement, principles of financial analysis, choice of entity, regulatory frameworks, banking and insurance, and problem solving as a business lawyer. Students will use the Wall Street Journal as their text and examine current business law issues in the news. Class time will also be spent discussing the work students do at their placements, the skills they are building, and their impressions of transactional lawyers and their practice setting.

Grading and Method of Evaluation:
Letter grade only. Students will be assessed based on reflective writing assignments, a drafting project, in-class exercises and presentations, and professionalism and class participation.
