The Business of Business

The Business of Business

There has never been a more exciting time to study and practice business law. As the financial markets undergo a paradigm shift triggered by the recent global financial crisis, there is a pressing need for a new era of lawyers. The profession will require proactive advocates who can partner with clients, from small businesses and private organizations to large corporations and multinationals, to anticipate issues before they arise.

Our academic program of depth and distinction provides you with the fundamental knowledge in business basics and substantive law, as well as intense focus on complex aspects of global financial regulation. Students will acquire the analytical techniques necessary to approach emerging legal issues with confidence. For those who are interested in pursuing a career in the field, we offer a Certificate in Business Law to enhance employment opportunities.

Our acclaimed business law faculty includes long-standing members with remarkable experience and deep roots in the business law community, as well as brilliant young scholars, representing the next generation of business law leaders. Their widely-cited scholarship focuses on timely issues of societal concern, such as corporate governance, data privacy, and broker-dealer relationships. Our students benefit from working with faculty on groundbreaking research in the field.

In addition to a program of rigorous academic study, there are additional enrichment opportunities. Our Dennis J. Block Center for the Study of International Business Law includes an outstanding fellowship program and organizes an ambitious schedule of symposia and forums throughout the year. Students can become members of two highly regarded law journals devoted to business topics, or join the Securities and Corporations moot court teams, both of which have had a successful track record in their respective competitions.

Ultimately, our location, just minutes from Wall Street, the epicenter of international finance, provides the greatest learning laboratory and is an optimal place to study the evolution of business practice. There are internship opportunities at nearly every major financial company, along with regulatory agencies, law firms, and the bankruptcy courts.
