    For the fourth consecutive year, Brooklyn Law School has been named to Billboard magazine’s list of top music law schools, published in the Oct. 20, 2018, print edition.

  • 10.12.18 Center for Health, Science & Public Policy Program Considers “the Good Biocitizen”

    Scientists, scholars and practitioners convened at the Law School in October for a two-day symposium sponsored by the Center for Health, Science & Public Policy that explored important ethical issues raised by genomic knowledge. Today, access to genetic information has become so commonplace that anyone can pay a genetic testing company, such as 23andMe, for detailed information about their genetic make-up. However, as 23andMe warns prospective customers, “this knowledge is irrevocable.” The warning goes to the heart of an ethical debate. On the one hand, genomic knowledge is a gift, offering insights into genetic diseases and the paths of our ancestors. On the other, it is a weight, creating new obligations, new forms of social classification, and new forms of surveillance.

    The New York legal community has ranked Brooklyn Law School’s LL.M. program for Internationally Trained Lawyers No. 2 Best General LL.M. Program in the annual New York Law Journal Best of 2018 reader poll. In the special magazine supplement, published Sept. 24, NYU School of Law placed first while Columbia Law School was third.

  • 09.21.18 Brooklyn Law School Marks Constitution Day with Program on Direction of SCOTUS

    Faculty and students at the Law School celebrated Constitution Day, the annual commemoration of the signing of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787, with an engaging discussion of critical constitutional issues and the future direction of the U.S. Supreme Court. The event, “The Supreme Court at a Crossroads,” featured Professors Alice Ristroph, William Araiza, Joel Gora, and Susan Herman, president of the ACLU, with each highlighting issues and cases that have significant legal and societal implications.

    Brooklyn Law School welcomed 360 new students on August 20 at the annual Convocation Ceremony, held in the Ceremonial Courtroom at the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Vice Dean Steven Dean served as master of ceremonies for the event, which also featured remarks from Stacy Caplow, Associate Dean of Professional Legal Education; Hon. Robert A. Katzmann, Chief Judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit; and Maryellen Fullerton, Interim Dean. Hon. I. Leo Glasser ’48, U.S. District Court Judge, Eastern District of New York, attended the ceremony as a special guest. Glasser was dean of the Law School from 1977 to 1981 and a member of the faculty from 1948 to 1969.

    Professor Maryellen Fullerton Named Interim Dean as Nationwide Search Commences

    Brooklyn Law School has announced that President and Dean Nicholas W. Allard plans to step down effective June 30, 2018, after leading the law school for six years. The law school will launch a nationwide search in early June for a successor. Professor Maryellen Fullerton has been named the Interim Dean and will serve in that capacity during the search process.

    Hon. Dora L. Irizarry, the first Hispanic District Judge to serve in the Eastern District of New York and the first Hispanic woman Chief Judge within the Second Circuit, will address graduates at Brooklyn Law School’s 117th commencement at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on May 18.

    Brooklyn Law School held its sixth annual Business Boot Camp, which gives students an opportunity to learn from alumni business leaders and entrepreneurs during a four-day “mini MBA” winter session course led by Professor Michael Gerber and presented in collaboration with Deloitte Financial Advisory Services and John P. Oswald ’84, President and Chief Executive Officer Capital Trust Group and member of the Board of Trustees.
