01.03.18 Timothy Sini ’05 Takes Office as Suffolk County District Attorney
Timothy Sini ’05 Elected Suffolk County District Attorney

Timothy Sini ’05 was sworn in as the district attorney of Suffolk County, N.Y., on Jan. 2, with Professor Elizabeth Schneider, who worked closely with Sini when he was a law student, seated on the stage as his special guest. The oath of office was administered by New York Senator Charles Schumer.

“The Brooklyn Law School community is incredibly proud of Tim,” said Schneider. “He is a person of tremendous ability, integrity and commitment to public service. I was not surprised that one speaker after another praised him for the same qualities I saw in him as a law student. He represents the very best of Brooklyn Law and is a shining example of how students can use their law degrees for greater good.”

Sini, a Democrat who previously served as Suffolk County police commissioner, won the seat last November in what The New York Timescalled a “resounding victory.” He ran against another Brooklyn Law School graduate, defense lawyer and former prosecutor Raymond Perini ’73. The election took place just weeks after the previous district attorney was indicted, and Sini’s campaign focused on cleaning up corruption in a county that has suffered from scandal in recent years. He reinforced that message in his inauguration speech, according to Newsday.

“Today marks the moment we usher in a new era of criminal justice in Suffolk County—one that ensures public safety, champions the law, and promotes faith and trust in our law enforcement agencies,” said Sini. “The first and most important objective is to restore integrity to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.”

Sini will restructure the DA’s office to enable greater focus on training and evaluation of lawyers and investigators. His priorities include environmental crime, identity theft, elder abuse, gang-related crime, and the proliferation of opioid abuse.

Prior to becoming police commissioner, Sini was a federal prosecutor for the Southern District of New York. Before that he worked in corporate law in Manhattan and clerked for two federal judges.
