    A major conference held at Brooklyn Law School on December 2 drew several hundred leaders from the government, development, and advocacy communities to discuss the future of Brooklyn zoning. The Law School co-sponsored the daylong conference, The Next 100 Years of Brooklyn Zoning, in partnership with the New York City Council and the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce.

    The Right Hon. Lord John Dyson was the featured speaker at the IBL Breakfast Roundtable: Controlling the Complexity and Cost of Civil Litigation: A View from a British Judge, sponsored by the Dennis J. Block Center for the Study of International Business Law, on November 30, at the Down Town Association in Lower Manhattan. Dyson recently retired from his position as Master of the Rolls, the second most senior judicial position in England and Wales.

    Heather Ann Thompson, author of the highly acclaimed book Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and its Legacy, was the featured speaker on a panel at the Law School Nov. 10 on the legacy of the uprising and the current state of New York’s prison system. The event was sponsored by the new Center for Criminal Justice.

    Billboard magazine named Brooklyn Law to its top-10 list of law schools that offer students the leading-edge expertise they need to succeed in today’s music business. Other schools on the list included Cornell, Harvard, Penn, Berkeley, USC, and UCLA law schools. The magazine also named Brooklyn Law School a top school for music lawyers in its July 2016 issue.

    Brooklyn Law School has named Sean P. Moriarty, who has a longstanding record of success in fund-raising and alumni operations for higher education institutions, as Chief Advancement Officer leading the Office of Development and Alumni Relations. Moriarty will oversee all development and alumni relations efforts and create a top-level operation that will advance the Law School mission by raising money to support students, faculty, and programs, engage alumni, and build relationships with friends and prospective supporters.

  • 09.19.16 Dean Nick Allard Hosts Panel Featuring Ralph Nader at Brooklyn Book Festival

    At this year’s Brooklyn Book Festival on Sept. 18, Dean Nick Allard served as moderator for a panel that focused on the election process and voter empowerment. Titled “Politically Correct?,” the panel, which took place in the Moot Court Room at the Law School, featured consumer rights champion and former presidential candidate Ralph Nader, author and political commentator Thomas Frank, and Gloria J. Browne-Marshall, associate professor of constitutional law at John Jay College.

    Brooklyn Law School welcomed a new entering class of 350 students at the annual Convocation Ceremony on Aug. 22, held at the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. The event kicked off in the Law School plaza, where new students, faculty, and staff gathered for the procession to the courthouse.

    The Brooklyn Law School faculty is 26th in the nation in a ranking of law schools with the highest percentage of most-cited tenured faculty, according to Brian Leiter's Law School Reports. The other New York law schools in the top rankings are Cornell, Columbia, and NYU law schools.

    Brooklyn Law School was named one of the “Top Schools of the Top Music Lawyers” by Billboard magazine in its July 23 print edition. The magazine named 11 law schools to its list, including Harvard, Columbia, NYU, Cornell, and UC Berkeley, among others. Billboard also named Peter Brodsky ’90   and  Allen Grubman ’67  to its roster of the “Top Music Lawyers 2016.”

    On July 13, Brooklyn Law School welcomed a group of 12 college students enrolled in the Princeton Startup-Immersion Program (PSIP) to participate in a discussion on legal issues that startup businesses often encounter. The Center for Urban Business Entrepreneurship (CUBE) sponsored the event and featured as speakers Professor Jonathan Askin, CUBE Director John Rudikoff ’06, Nithya B. Das ’06, and Leo Kittay ‘08.

    Brooklyn Law School is one of the top-ranked law schools in New York State and 31st in the nation for federal judicial clerkship placement rates, according to the legal blog Excess of Democracy. The Law School ranked fourth in New York State after Columbia, Cornell, and NYU law schools for total federal judicial clerkship placements. The rankings were calculated using employment data from the American Bar Association covering a three-year sample size for the Classes of 2013-2015.

    For the third consecutive year, The National Jurist has ranked Brooklyn Law School as a top 20 law school in the nation for practical training. At 16, Brooklyn Law School was the highest ranked school in New York City and New York State. The rankings are based on experiential learning opportunities, with data from the American Bar Association and individual law schools, emphasizing categories that include clinics, externships, simulation courses, and interschool competitions, and pro bono opportunities.

    The National Law Journal has ranked Brooklyn Law School 36th in the nation on its list of “The 2016 Go-To Law Schools.” This annual report identifies the top 50 law schools with the highest percentage of 2015 juris doctor graduates hired as first-year associates at the nation’s 100 largest law firms.

    PreLaw magazine, a leading news source in legal education, has ranked Brooklyn Law School in the top 20 law schools in the nation for public service, earning an “A” grade in the public interest category. The rankings were based on data gathered from every ABA law school in the country, with emphasis on law school curriculum, employment outcomes, and financial factors (salary, debt, and LRAP).
