Charles Cohen ’77 was the subject of an in-depth profile in the Dec. 15 Palm Beach Post that highlighted his long and successful career in real estate and film. Cohen’s lifelong love of theater, film, architecture, and design have come together in his most recent project to renovate West Palm Beach’s Carefree Theatre, building six new auditoriums and adding 97 apartments to the site.

Cohen, who divides his time between Palm Beach and New York City, is a real estate developer and president and CEO of Cohen Brothers Realty Corp., a company founded by his father, Sherman Cohen. The company owns 12 million square feet of property in New York, California, Texas, and Florida, now including the Carefree Theatre. He is also chairman of Cohen Media Group which was founded in 2008 when a colleague needed financing for his wife’s film. That film, Frozen River, went on to win the 2008 Sundance Film Festival Grand Prize and two Academy Awards. Since then, Cohen Media has distributed dozens of films, including a 2015 documentary about Alfred Hitchcock and Francois Truffaut and The Salesman, which was recently nominated for a Golden Globe for best motion picture in a foreign language.

“This is the best time of my life,” Cohen said.
