Brooklyn Law School - Jared Brenner

In a detailed Q&A with Lawdragon, former musician Jared Brenner ’15 tells how he’s found a new kind of creative community at Brooklyn Law School. A community he’s become a prominent proponent and member of: entrepreneurs of the tech startup variety.

As a senior member of the Brooklyn Law Incubator & Policy (BLIP) Clinic and an inaugural fellow of the Law School’s Center for Urban Business Entrepreneurship (CUBE), Brenner has had the opportunity to collaborate with lawyers and other students to provide pro bono transactional legal services for clients ranging from tech startups to art and music collectives to New York City government officials.

“[Startups] don’t always anticipate how to deal with the fallout if their business blows up or fails to gain traction,” Brenner said. “Their idea of an agreement is a handshake or a bare-bones piece of paper saying who they are and what they’re about. Meanwhile, 90 percent of startups fail. Those are the same odds stacked against musicians. They need a general counsel simply to write operating agreements that encapsulate their mission, their intent and that also deal with all the contingencies of being in business.”

Brenner said Brooklyn Law School is training him to be a business lawyer who can both advise and become an entrepreneur.
