09.19.14 Carol Buell `80 Awarded 2014 Leading Practitioner Award by the National LGBT Bar Association
    Carol Buell '80

Carol Buell `80, a founding partner of Weiss Buell & Bell, was awarded a 2014 Leading Practitioner Award by the National LGBT Bar Association at the Lavender Law Conference last month. The award recognizes attorneys for improving the lives of the members of the LGBT community through outstanding legal work.

Buell has been at the head of her firm for over 20 years, and practices in the areas of residential real estate and estate planning. She also has a special expertise representing non-traditional families in domestic partnership, second parent adoption, and other family law matters.

Buell has been at the forefront of helping to develop alternative family law. She was one of the first attorneys to develop an expertise in representing clients in matters related to second parent adoptions, alternative insemination, known donor agreements, and co-parenting agreements. She represented the parties in a 2009 groundbreaking case: In re Adoption of Sebastian. The New York Law Journal covered the case, noting “A Manhattan surrogate judge granted an adoption petition filed on behalf of a woman whose donated egg was fertilized and then implanted in her same-sex partner…The decision is an important step in guaranteeing legal rights for same-sex parents, as well as a reminder of the obstacles such parents continue to face…” (April 2009). Since its publication, In re Adoption of Sebastian has been cited in many law review articles and publications that address the issues of protecting LBGTQ families and the portability of those rights and protections across state borders.

Buell is a member of the National Family Law Advisory Council of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, Inc. She served as a co-chair and board member of the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, Inc. from 1987-1993.
