Legal Writing Faculty

Real-World Experience in the Classroom

The professors in the Legal Writing Program bring substantial and vibrant real-world legal experience to the classroom, and they highly value—and take great care in—teaching the art and science of legal writing. Students are their first priority, which shows in the faculty’s dedication to helping every law student find his or her authentic lawyer voice through writing and speaking about the law.

Professor Heidi K. Brown recently joined the faculty as the new Director of the Legal Writing Program. Professor Brown was a litigator for many years, resolving disputes between key players in the construction industry nationwide, such as developers, owners, contractors, architects, engineers, and subcontractors. Our legal writing faculty collectively share impeccable academic credentials (including two valedictorians from Brooklyn Law School) and a vast range of legal practice experience from BigLaw to public interest and pro bono work. Many members of the faculty have held prominent federal and state judicial clerkships. The faculty shares a wide range of interests that lend depth to their classroom teaching skills; for example, two professors are former editors in the publishing industry, two are Fulbright scholars, and one is a former national security analyst for the Central Intelligence Agency and a former liaison to the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force in New York City. Many faculty members have taught internationally or served as Brooklyn Law School ambassadors overseas, in locations such as China, Italy, and India (and collectively have language skills in Arabic, Korean, French, Italian, and Hindi). The legal writing faculty enjoys writing in non-legal genres as well, to master storytelling and narrative techniques; several professors are working on novels and non-fiction books.

The Legal Writing Program’s founder and first Director, Professor Emeritus Marilyn Walter, and our current Writing Specialist, Professor Elizabeth Fajans, have each won a coveted lifetime achievement award from the Association of American Law Schools for their contributions to the field. Professors Walter and Fajans also co-authored Writing and Analysis in the Law, now in its 6th edition, one of the most widely used first-year legal writing textbooks. Professor Brown won the 2014 Global Legal Skills Award for “excellence in the advancement of global legal skills education around the world,” and has authored The Mindful Legal Writer: Mastering Predictive and Persuasive Writing (2016), and Fundamentals of Federal Litigation, a federal civil procedure treatise.
