A study of the delicate balance between government benevolence and individual autonomy. The seminar will consider the rights of mentally ill and mentally retarded persons in institutional and community settings. Students will examine the development of case law and statutes, analyze briefs and transcripts from selected cases, and have the opportunity to attend court hearings.

Grading and Method of Evaluation:

Letter grade with pass/fail option. Take-home exam.
