Law of War Seminar

This seminar covers the international Law of War. It will focus primarily on jus in bello (battlefield law). The subject matter is also sometimes referred to as the law of armed conflict, or international humanitarian law. Topics covered include the rules of distinction, proportionality, and military necessity, torture, targeted killing, rules of engagement, obedience to orders, war crimes, and the regulation of weapons. We will focus both on armed conflicts between States, and between States and non-State actors. This is not a course on national security law, human rights law, history, or ethics, though elements of all of those topics will naturally be touched upon.

Grading and Method of Evaluation:
Letter grade only. A paper is required that may be used to satisfy the UCWR. Class participation will also be an element of the final grade.
