Graduation Requirements | Graduation Requirements
Basic Requirements: You are responsible for planning your program so that you will complete all required courses by the time you expect to graduate.
- You must successfully complete at least 86 credits.
- You must successfully complete all required courses including Professional Responsibility.
- You must satisfy the Upper Class Writing Requirement (UCWR). Find more registration information about courses being offered for the Fall Semester 2006 that satisfy this requirement.
Residency Requirements: You must meet all ABA and NY Court of Appeals residency requirements, which are (in heavily condensed form):
- Full-Time Students: If you plan to graduate in 6 semesters (3 years), you must have successfully completed at least 10 credits in each of 6 semesters.
- Part-Time Students: If you plan to graduate in 7 or 8 semesters (3 ½ or 4 years), you must have successfully completed at least 8 credits in each of 7 semesters.
- Summer School: Summer School may also be used toward meeting residency requirements, depending on the number of credits taken and the student’s division.
If you transferred divisions during your time at the Law School, or have not met the above requirements, please contact Assistant Registrar Jennifer Harewood at jennifer.harewood@brooklaw.edu or 718-780-0313, to discuss any questions or concerns that arise regarding residency and graduation.
Limits on Non-Classroom Hours: There is an 18 credit limit on the number of non-classroom credit hours students may count toward their 86 credits for graduation.
- You may take a maximum of 12 clinical credits. Certain clinic programs are offered for both clinical and academic credit. The 12 credit limit applies only to the clinical credits earned in these courses.
- You may take a maximum of 6 non-classroom hours for credits earned for Law Review, Journal of International Law, Journal of Law & Policy or Moot Court Honor Society participation and in Independent Research.
For good cause, the Registrar may waive either the 6-credit or 12-credit limit but may not waive the overall 18-credit ceiling.
Review/Journal Information: All Review/Journal staff receive 1 credit the first semester. Executive Board members receive 2 credits the second semester. Students who successfully complete their note or comment receive 2 credits the second semester. All others receive 1 credit for the second semester. It is your responsibility to register accordingly.
