Address/Name Change
I changed my address and/name. How do I notify the School?
Change of Address/Name for all school communications are processed through the Registrar.s Office. Forms are available at the office, or you can download and print them here:

New York State Bar Examination
What do I need in order to take the NYS bar examination?
In order to take the New York State bar exam, a graduating student must file:

  • the New York State Examination Application -- Applicants may apply to sit for the bar examination by either filing an on-line electronic application through the Board.s secured On-Line Application System or by printing and mailing a paper application (PDF version) with the appropriate payment to the NYS Board of Law Examiners. The application fee is $250.00. To access the application materials click on the icon for "Application Materials" on the Board's website NYS Board of Law Examiners. In addition, applications must be postmarked or submitted on line within the filing period, at least 90 days but no more than 120 days prior to the Examination for which the application is being made. (Note: a postage meter date is not considered a postmark.)
  • the Handwriting Specimen Form with the Registrar.s Office - the Form must be completed in the Registrar.s Office and photo ID must be shown. Upon graduation, the handwriting specimen form and an official transcript, in lieu of the Law School Certificate of Attendance, will be submitted on the student.s behalf to the NYS Board of Examiners.

New Jersey State Bar Examination
You can download the Application at www.njbarexams.org. Please view the compiled list of FAQs on the NJS Bar for more information.

  • On receipt of your Law School Certificate form from the New Jersey Board of Law Examiners, you must submit it to the Registrar's Office to be prepared in its entirety by an authorized official of the law school and mailed directly to New Jersey Board of Bar Examiners. Before you submit the certificate to the Registrar's Office, please complete Part I of the form. You may submit the certificate prior to graduation, however it will not be sent to the Board of Law Examiners until your degree is conferred.

Exam Conflicts
What do I do if I have a conflict for a final examination?
The Law School recognizes five situations for which a final exam may be rescheduled:

  1. Direct conflicts (two exams scheduled concurrently)
  2. Three exams scheduled within any 48-hour period. All three exams must begin and end within 48 hours.
  3. Two exams scheduled back to back (e.g. an exam from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and another the same day from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., or an exam one evening and another the next morning)
  4. Four exams scheduled within the first week (one exam will be scheduled the following week)
  5. Religious conflict

If you have an exam conflict as outlined above, you must notify the Registrar by completing a Final Examination Conflict Form or hardcopy available from the Registrar.s Office. Good Standing/Degree/Enrollment Certification
How can I get a written verification that I am enrolled or have graduated from Brooklyn Law School? If enrolled, how can I get a letter stating my good academic standing?
Letters of Certification of Good Standing, Degree, and Enrollment may be obtained by submitting a Certification of Enrollment Request form (PDF) to the Registrar.s Office.

To be in .good academic standing,. you must maintain a cumulative weighted average of at least 2.0 (C). For more information, please see the Student Handbook, p. 19.

Graduation
I am a graduating student. What do I need to do in preparation for graduation?
Prior to your intended graduation date, Assistant Registrar Jennifer Harewood prepares your graduation audit to make sure that you have fulfilled all degree requirements. Graduating students with deficiencies will be contacted by Ms. Harewood. All graduating students will receive a copy of their preliminary and final audits in the mail. If you have any questions about your status, you may contact Ms. Harewood at jennifer.harewood@brooklaw.edu. Graduating students must also complete the Application for Graduation through WebAdvisor at the appropriate time.

Commencement Ceremony
Prior to the ceremony, cap and gown measurements must be placed online. Visit the Commencement section for specific instructions and deadlines.

Diplomas
To order diplomas, graduating students must submit the BLS Application for Graduation through WebAdvisor

Graduates who participate in the commencement ceremony will receive their diplomas at Avery Fisher Hall following the ceremony. Those who do not attend the ceremony will have to contact the Registrar.s Office at (718) 780-7913 to arrange for diploma pick-up or mailing.

State Bar Examinations

Leave of Absence
I am a student on a leave of absence and would like to return to BLS. How do I go about doing so?
You may return from a leave of absence by notifying the Registrar in writing, provided that you will return within the time period specified in the leave and that you have complied with all of the leave conditions. To read more about taking a leave of absence, see the Student Handbook, p.29.

Special Needs
I am a student with special needs. How can I get accommodations?
Special Needs accommodations are made for students with disabilities that require adjustments in test taking conditions and curricular and co-curricular activities, and for students with difficulty in English. Students with special needs are encouraged to consult the Student Handbook, p. 21-22 regarding requests for accommodations and required documentation, and to contact the Registrar, Suzanne Dennis at suzanne.dennis@brooklaw.edu or (718) 780-7913.

Student Retention/Graduation Rates
What are the student retention and graduation rates at BLS?
Updated statistics are pending. The latest available statistics are that 94% of the full-time students who entered the Law School in 1996 began their second year that fall: similarly, 91% of the 1996 part-time students returned in 1997. 88% of the full-time students who entered in 1995 and 92% of the part-time students who entered in 1994 earned their Juris Doctor degrees.

Student Visas
I am an international student. How do I get my student visa?
International students who are or will be studying at Brooklyn Law School should contact the Registrar.s Office at registrar@brooklaw.edu or (718)780-7913 to request visa documents, request extensions of authorized periods of stay in the United States, request work authorization, optional practical training or practical training after completion of studies.

Transcripts
I need a copy of my transcript. How do I submit my request?
All transcript requests require the student.s signed authorization. You may write a letter requesting a transcript, or simply download, print and complete our Transcript Request Form (PDF). Requests should be faxed to (718) 780-7548 or mailed to Benjamin Korman, Registrar.s Office, Brooklyn Law School, 250 Joralemon Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201. Students may obtain unofficial transcripts in person. Unofficial transcripts are supplied free of charge. Official transcripts must be addressed and mailed to a third party. If you are required by the third party to hand deliver or mail your transcript with other materials, you may request permission to do so from the Registar. The first official transcript is free; subsequent transcripts are $4.00 each.
