A Review of Lewis S. Calderon et al, Mandatory Pro Bono for Law Students: Another Dimension in Legal Education

Mandatory pro bono programs for law students offer the indigent legal services while providing field training and practical skills for law students. It is further considered that a student's exposure to pro bono service while in law school may instill a moral sense of duty that continues into that student's professional career; a pressing goal given that bar associations, such as the New York Bar Association, generally have blocked pro bono service requirements for their memberships. A few law schools have instituted mandatory pro bono requirements for their students. The authors consider the advantages and disadvantages of existing programs, and propose a flexible, multi-option approach which combines clinical programs, independent study, pro bono oriented courses and public service opportunities.
