The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sponsored by the IRS allows low wage workers to get their income taxes filed for free by qualified volunteers.
BLS volunteers are trained in how to electronically file taxes by the Food Change organization. Training is conducted the first week in January before the beginning of Spring semester. Students then volunteer at a convenient site location here in Brooklyn for as many or as few hours as their schedule allows. During the tax season, student tax preparers are supervised by staff from the FoodChange organization in addition to the many checks in the e-filing software.
Last year BLS students helped put over $300,000 back into the community through this program. It can be a great addition to a Public Interest resume even for those who don't want to practice tax law. For more information contact Bryan Levine at bryan.levine@brooklaw.edu.
