Legal Association of Activist Women (LAW)

Introduction   |   Programs   |   Executive Board and Contacts

LAW provides numerous networking and learning events for law students throughout the year. At these events, women practicing in law firm, courtroom, and academic environments share their experience and wisdom to prepare law students for the specific challenges that they will face as women in the legal world. Email any of the contacts below to stay abreast of these events.

LAW also works with various organizations, including Safe Horizon, Sanctuary for Families/Center for Battered Women's Legal Services, New York Legal Assistance Group, Network for Women's Services, and the Brooklyn Bar Assciation Volunteer Lawywer's Project, in order to provide unique opportunities for students to advocate for domestic violence victims inside and outside the courtroom. Students who want to participate will be trained by lawyers in the specific projects. The following programs are available:

Courtroom Advocates Program (CAP)
Contacts: Jenna Adams, jenna.adams@brooklaw.edu; Jennifer Francone, jennifer.francone@brooklaw.edu

This project is available Monday through Friday during the morning or afternoon (students are assigned certain dates to be in court). Students go into Family Court where they provide direct legal advocacy services for victims of domestic violence seeking orders of protection. Students prepare a case with an attorney and advocate before a judge on their own. Time commitment is one and a half day per semester plus a few phone calls.

Uncontested Divorce Preparation for Battered Women
Contact: Carla Sanderson, carla.sanderson@brooklaw.edu

Working with Sanctuary for Families and the Volunteer Lawyer’s Project of the Brooklyn Bar Association, volunteers are assigned a client and then conduct the initial intake interview, prepare the divorce petition, file the court papers, and conduct follow-up meetings with the client.

Annual Spring Fundraiser
Contacts: Jenny Ma, jenny.ma@brooklaw.edu; Svetlana Kolomeyer, svetlana.kolomeyer@gmail.com

Each year LAW hosts an annual fundraiser in February to raise awareness of domestic violence and benefit local domestic violence organizations.
