Many law students who hope to work in the public interest are unable to do so because of the high cost of attending law school. BLSPI helps alleviate this financial burden by raising money to fund fellowships for students working at public interest summer jobs that pay no salary. Efforts are also underway to preserve and expand the school's Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP) which assists graduates working in low paying public interest jobs.
BLSPI is active in several of the country's leading organizations, including Equal Justice Works, which engage in organizing, training and supporting public service minded law students, and organizations which create summer and postgraduate public interest job opportunities.
BLSPI increases student exposure and encourages involvement in public interest law through programs like the annual volunteer fair, prominent guest speakers, and BLSPI sponsored symposiums. Fundraising events such as the annual BLSPI Auction and Talent Show are exciting social events for the students and faculty each semester. BLSPI also maintains a commitment to assisting our local community through activities such as voter registration drives, Thanksgiving food drives, and participation in the annual NY AIDS Walk.
Talent Show
Held each Fall, the BLSPI Talent Show gives students (and Faculty) a chance to show off their non-legal talents. Prizes are awarded to the winners and proceeds help fund summer fellowships.
BLSPI Auction
Held every Spring Semester the week before spring break, this auction is the main source of funding for summer fellowships. Past auction items have included dinners and lunches with faculty, tickets to sporting events and the theater, and vacation packages. Auction item donations from faculty, students and alumni are always welcome! Read about the 2007 Auction.
Work-A-Day Pledge Drive
Held in the spring, BLSPI asks students to pledge one days pay from their summer/post-graduate employment to fund public interest fellowships.
Symposia
BLSPI invites experts to speak on current issues in public interest law. Recently, BLSPI co-sponsored symposia on homelessness and child abduction issues.
Voter Registration Drive
The most recent registration drive registered over 500 voters, including BLS students and faculty.
