Intellectual Enrichment

The World in Action

The Dennis J. Block Center of International Law is a key intellectual resource on campus for studies relating to the increasing globalization of the economy. It sponsors numerous, topical programs in which government officials, leading practitioners, and scholars from around the world address emerging legal and public policy issues affecting areas such as international securities regulation, trade, banking, international taxation, pension reform, and intellectual property law.

In addition, the IBL Center co-sponsors a Breakfast Roundtable Series on such topics as international capital markets, international trade/antitrust, international intellectual property, international tax, and international bankruptcy and commercial law. The Center also hosts luminaries – Visiting Distinguished Scholars, Scholars-in-Residence, or Visiting Professors – who come from around the world to do research here and participate in the Center’s public activities.

Student-Run Activities

The Brooklyn Journal of International Law publishes articles on international law by authors in public and private practice. The journal co-sponsors many symposia with the IBL Center, and publishes papers presented at them. Some of the recent programs held include: “Ruling the World: Problems and Concerns of Generating International Legal Norms,” “Corporate Liability for Grave Breaches of International Law,” “Bankruptcy in the Global Village: The Second Decade,” and “War and Trade.”

One of the most active student organizations on campus is the International Law Society. It funds a fellowship program and organizes an expansive variety of programs on a wide range of international topics. Recent discussions have covered international arbitration and combating climate change.

Our award-winning student Moot Court Honor Society participates annually in the world's largest competition, the Jessup International Competition, a simulation of a fictional dispute between countries before the U.N.’s International Court of Justice. Our teams also take part in matches on international commercial law and arbitration for resolution of international business disputes.
