04.05.13 Stacy Kanter ’84 Named “Dealmaker of the Year” by The American Lawyer
    Stacy Kanter

Stacy Kanter ’84, a corporate finance partner at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, was included in The American Lawyer’s list of “Dealmakers of the Year.” This coveted list of a dozen attorneys across the country “spotlights innovation and creativity in mergers and acquisitions, capital markets, project finance, and bankruptcy work.” The editors selected their Dealmakers of the Year by focusing “on the handful of lawyers who played pivotal roles in some of the most notable transactions of 2012.”

Kanter was selected for her work as issuer’s counsel on the $1.2 billion Realogy IPO. At the end of this four-year deal, which began as a debt restructuring, Kanter had led 20 Skadden lawyers through five major transactions that ultimately cleared the way to Realogy's IPO. It was the biggest private equity–backed IPO in the United States last year, according to Dealogic. The transactions, which “transform[ed] Realogy from a troubled real estate business into the biggest private equity-backed IPO of 2012 took patience, creativity, and perseverance,” wrote the editors.

Kanter's organization and composure helped make it all possible, said Marilyn Wasser, Realogy’s general counsel. "Stacy and her team helped us deal with a complicated capital structure," she said. "It was like playing chess on several levels. It took intense, committed lawyering. Everything was a building block to something else.”

Kanter said Realogy represents, in some sense, a microcosm of the economic cycle in the last four years. "Realogy is so emblematic of the financial crisis," starting with its acquisition before the economic downfall, stirrings of recovery, to the IPO. "In the end, it was one of those things where the sun, moon, and stars were perfectly aligned... It was thrilling."

This honor is the latest in a series of accolades Kanter has received. She was also the recipient of the “Best in Capital Markets” 2012 Euromoney Women in Business Law Award. She was named by Chambers Global: The World’s Leading Lawyers for Business as one of the leading individual capital markets lawyers in New York for debt and equity. Additionally, Kanter repeatedly has been selected for inclusion in Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business. One client quoted in Chambers appraising her approach said, “She managed the people, found the compromises, and was a calming influence on all concerned,” and Chambers noted that “she has the ability to make deals happen.” She also was selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America and The Legal 500 United States. Kanter was also included in Crain’s New York Business’ annual list of the 40 top business leaders under age 40.
