Second Annual Spelling Bee Held in Memory of Professor Sara Robbins
SBA Raises Over $2,000 for the Memorial Scholarship in Her Name
Mar. 3, 2008 – The Brooklyn Law School Student Bar Association held its Second Annual Spelling Bee in memory of BLS Professor and former librarian Sara Robbins on Jan. 30. Over 35 contestants, including students and faculty members, competed to win the top prize, dinner for two at the Michelin-rated Saul Restaurant on Smith Street in Brooklyn.
Professors Christopher Serkin and Michael Cahill returned this year to judge the competition with what has become their trademark humor and good spirits. During the first round, the two professors put everyone on notice that they “reserved the right to assign words to certain individuals based on their potential entertainment value.” When it was Professor Nan Hunter’s turn to spell, for example, Professor Serkin told her that her word was tenure. When asked to use the word in a sentence, Serkin responded, “Please, please, please, give me tenure.” Professor Susan Herman walked away the winner of the bee, when she correctly spelled “maillot,” pronounced mah-YO, a strapless one-piece women’s bathing suit.
More than 100 people attended the event, which raised over $2,000 for the Sara Robbins Memorial Scholarship. “It was once again, a great event for a great cause,” said Stephen Medow ’09, the SBA upper-class delegate who organized the event. “People had a lot of fun.”
