Supreme Court to Hear Sophina Ray Case

On April 3, 2003, Sophina Ray’s appeal will go before the Supreme Court in a special session at Brooklyn Law School. Ray, whose rise from small-town girl, to supermodel, to head of the fasion and cosmetics empire, Sophina, Inc., was convicted last July on federal charges of securities fraud and obstruction of justice. Once America’s media darling, Ray has become a symbol of corporate greed and corruption. Together with her CFO and lover, Evan White, Ray manipulated Sophina Inc.’s finances to mislead investors and then tried to cover up the mess.

Ray’s fate now lies in the Supreme Court’s hands. Essential to her appeal are the admissibility of some key pieces of evidence. The Court will have to decide whether the grand jury testimony of a key witness is admissible. She was in a car accident and now suffers from amnesia. Also in question are statements made during settlement negotiations. And they will decide if comments made by the United States Attorney at a cocktail party are admitted. The Supreme Court is expected to reach a quick decision.

Note: Sophina Ray is a fictional character created for the Dean Jerome Prince Evidence Competition to be held April 3-5, 2003. Read more about the competition.
