Ilene Stein ’08 Wins Borchard Fellowship to Work on Medicare Rights

June 2008 -- Ilene Stein ’08 has won a fellowship from the Borchard Foundation Center on Law and Aging which will provide an award of $39,000 for one year to work with the Medicare Rights Center (MRC), an organization dedicated to helping older adults and people with disabilities access affordable health care.

Stein’s fellowship will focus on two areas: direct client services – helping people secure Medicare benefits to which they are entitled, and policy analysis and reform – addressing Medicare consumer issues on the state and national levels. She will be stationed at the organization’s office in Washington, D.C.

Stein spent a year at MRC’s New York office as a legal clerk handling Medicare Part D appeals cases. “I began to see the obstacles that elderly people face and the importance of helping to improve their quality of life,” she said. In the coming year, “I hope to gain greater insight into the issues affecting Medicare beneficiaries in order to advocate for systematic improvements.” She credits Professor Karen Porter, Executive Director of Law School's Center for Health, Science, and Public Policy, and a previous Borchard fellow, Carrie S. Zoubul ’06, for their encouragement and support during the fellowship application process.

During Law School, Stein also interned at the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), the New York Attorney General’s Office in the litigation bureau, and for Judge Adlai S. Hardin of the United States Bankruptcy Court, SDNY. The daughter of an alumnus, Howard Stein ’67, she received her B.A. at Tufts University, and then worked in Washington for three years. She was a correspondence assistant for Senator Barbara Boxer, and an associate at The Dewey Square Group, a political policy and strategy firm. Additionally, she was a consultant to the Children’s Health Forum/CHF Action Fund, assisting the noted civil rights leader Dr. Benjamin Hooks, founder of the organization and former executive director of the NAACP.
