Supreme Court Nominee Judge Sotomayor's
long-standing connection to Brooklyn Law School.
May 26, 2009 – Speaking about today's announcement by President Barack Obama that his Supreme Court nominee will be Judge Sonia Sotomayor of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2d Circuit, Dean Joan G. Wexler said:
"President Obama has nominated an outstanding jurist to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, one whom Brooklyn Law School is honored to have as a special friend. In June 2001, the year of our Centennial Celebration, Judge Sonia Sotomayor delivered the commencement address at Avery Fisher Hall, where she emphasized the value of pro bono work and praised the Law School's clinical program.
At that time, she was presented with an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the Law School. In 2005, we were delighted to welcome Judge Sotomayor to the Law School in March. Along with members of Brooklyn Law School's Latin American Law Students Association (LALSA), she celebrated the launch of a Judicial Internship Placement Program, a joint effort of The Association of Judges of Hispanic Heritage and the Puerto Rican Bar Association.
At the reception, she delivered the keynote address. In June 2004, she participated in a symposium titled "A Tale of Two Systems: The State and Federal Courts in New York" The symposium, which I was pleased to moderate, was a joint effort of the State-Federal Judicial Council, the Bar Advisory Group of the Council, and the Law School. The discussions centered on two hypothetical cases that highlighted how state and federal courts handle preemption questions."
