BLS Softball Teams Compete in Virginia Men's and Co-ed Teams Qualify for Playoffs

April 24, 2008 - Brooklyn Law School sent two teams to Charlottesville, Va. to participate in the 25th Annual Virginia Law School Softball Invitational, which took place April 4 - 6. Over 100 teams battled over the weekend to become the top law school softball squad in the country. Donned in retro Brooklyn Dodgers hats and jerseys, both a men's team and a co-ed team competed for BLS in the tournament.
In the first game for the men's team, hitters were patient at the plate and their unselfish play made the victory a team effort. In the second game, BLS showed resilience and grit in coming from behind to tie the game. The third game showcased their best performance but their only loss. Playing solid in-field defense and spraying line drive hits all over the field, they went toe to toe with one of the tournament favorites, Florida Coastal. BLS held the lead until the bottom of the last inning. The men's team finished in second place in the division.
The BLS co-ed team opened the weekend Saturday morning with an unfortunate loss to Georgetown but quickly bounced back, winning their next three games, beating Boston College, Cleveland-Marshall and then Villanova in the first round of the playoffs. Poor weather and an altered playoff format ended their weekend early.
Other highlights from the weekend include a BBQ hosted by tournament organizers; the annual home-run derby in which Nick Reiter '08 competed; and the annual tournament party, which took place on the University of Virginia campus. "A great time was had by all," said Brian Simeone '08, who played on the men's team.
The players who aren't graduating this spring are already looking forward to building on the results next year. Students who want to participate in next year's tournament should send an e-mail to stephen.medow@brooklaw.edu.
