Professor Karmel to Join SEC Roundtable on International Financial Reporting Standards
 | |
Roberta S. Karmel, Centennial Professor of Law, was invited by the Securities and Exchange Commission to participate in a roundtable discussion on Tuesday, March 6, 2007 on the International Financial Reporting Standards “Roadmap.” The roundtable was held at SEC headquarters at 100 F Street, N.E., Washington, D.C., and was open to the public.
The “roadmap” describes the path toward eliminating the need for non-U.S. companies to reconcile to U.S. GAAP financial statements they prepare pursuant to IFRS issued by the International Accounting Standards Board in filings with the Commission. It is related to the recent report by the Committee on Regulation of the Capital Markets. Professor Karmel served on a panel entitled “The Effect on the Capital Raising Process in the U.S. Capital Markets.” SEC Chairman Christopher Cox and European Union Internal Market Commissioner Charlie McCreevy also took part in the day’s proceedings.
“Nearly 100 countries currently use, or have a policy of convergence with, IFRS,” said SEC Chairman Cox, “including the European Union, where IFRS reporting has been mandatory since 2005. Eliminating the current reconciliation requirement, and paving the way for the use of both systems in the United States, remains the objective of the roadmap. This roundtable will help us identify both opportunities and speed bumps along the way.”
