Norman Pearlstine’s career in the media has spanned nearly 40 years. He served for 11 years as editor-in-chief of Time Inc., from 1994 to 2005, where he oversaw the editorial content of the company’s 154 magazines. He also served a long tenure with The Wall Street Journal, from 1968 to 1992, except for a two-year period when he was an executive editor of Forbes magazine. At the Journal, he worked as a staff reporter in Dallas, Detroit and Los Angeles; as Tokyo bureau chief; and as managing editor of The Wall Street Journal Asia, and as its national editor in the early 1980s. He also held several posts at The Wall Street Journal Europe, including editor and publisher, managing editor and executive editor.
In addition, Mr. Pearlstine launched SmartMoney magazine for the Journal’s parent, Dow Jones & Company, and the Hearst Corporation. He then became general partner of Friday Holdings L.P., a multimedia investment company, and held that position until he joined Time Inc.
He joined The Carlyle Group in September 2006. He is a senior advisor to the private equity firm’s telecommunications and media group, which is based in New York. He is the recipient of many honors, including the American Society of Magazine Editors’ Lifetime Achievement Award and induction into the Magazine Editors’ Hall of Fame. Mr. Pearlstine is president and CEO of The American Academy in Berlin and is president of the Atsuko Chiba Foundation, which provides scholarships to Asian journalists for study in the United States. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. He received his LL.B. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
