Brooklyn Law School’s International Business Law Center Named for Dennis J. Block

Dean Joan G. Wexler has announced that Brooklyn Law School’s Center for the Study of International Business Law has been named for Dennis J. Block, a prominent attorney.

“Dennis Block is one of the nation’s preeminent corporate counselors with one of the most successful and respected corporate transactional practices in the world,” Dean Wexler said. “He is a leader of the corporate bar, a prolific author, a fine teacher, and a steadfast friend of the Law School. We are honored that the Center, now celebrating its 20th anniversary, will bear his name. His support underscores the Center’s important work of studying and shaping international business law and policy, and encourages the talented students, practitioners, and scholars associated with it.”

Block, a partner in the New York office of Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP, is widely recognized as one of the world’s leading corporate attorneys. He has been called one of the “Most Influential Lawyers in America” by The National Law Journal, was twice named as a “Dealmaker of the Year” by The American Lawyer, and is widely recognized by independent commentators as a leader of the corporate bar.  A 1967 graduate of Brooklyn Law School, he teaches Advanced Corporate Law as an adjunct professor at the Law School.

“My long affiliation with Brooklyn Law School has provided me with countless valuable experiences, exciting opportunities, and warm friendships,” said Block.  “As a student I was privileged to learn from great legal minds and as a professor I have had the pleasure of imparting my knowledge to the next generation of BLS attorneys. I am deeply humbled by and grateful to the School for this honor.  It is my hope that the law students who participate in the Center’s programs will go on to make their own indelible mark on the legal profession.”

The Dennis J. Block Center for the Study of International Business Law, as it is now known, provides fellowships and an enriched educational experience for students who are interested in pursuing a career in the field. It draws upon the Law School faculty’s depth of scholarship and experience and its strong international and business law curriculum. The Center is also known for its outstanding symposia that bring together leading practitioners, government officials, and legal scholars from around the world to discuss legal and public policy issues of concern to the international, financial and trading markets.

In his long and distinguished career, Block has advised a number of clients in a variety of complex issues. The largest and most complex deals in the marketplace in which he has provided legal and business counsel include Procter & Gamble’s acquisition of Gillette, Quaker Oats’ acquisition by PepsiCo Inc., U S WEST’s merger with Qwest,  RJR Nabisco’s acquisition by KKR, the Macy’s/Federated takeover fight, and the largest hostile takeover in U.S. history – Pfizer’s acquisition of Warner Lambert. In addition to his transactional work, Block regularly provides counsel to a number of large publicly-held corporations, their boards of directors, and their audit and special committees on issues involving corporate governance, the business judgment rule, D&O duties and liability, federal securities laws, attorney-client privilege, and government investigations. He also represents public companies, entrepreneurs, and investment and commercial banks in issues of public interest and debate.

Block is a former member of the council and co-chairman of the Committee on Corporate Counsel of the American Bar Association Section of Litigation and a former member of the Committee on Corporate Laws of the ABA Section of Business Law. An accomplished author of legal texts, he is also a member of the editorial boards of several legal publications as well as a frequent lecturer. Prior to entering private practice, he was a Branch Chief of Enforcement at the New York Regional Office of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
