Geraldo Rivera ’69

Jeffrey D. Forchelli, a member of the Brooklyn Law School Class of 1969, and a member of the School’s Board of Trustees, is the founder and managing partner of the firm of Forchelli, Curto, Schwartz, Mineo, Carlino & Cohn, LLP with offices in Mineola and Melville, New York.

Mr. Forchelli’s practice concentrates on complex real estate and land use matters, including litigation and tax certiorari for major real estate developers and major corporations. He represented Northrop Grumman Corporation in the extensive redevelopment of its property in Bethpage, New York, including the Grumman Airport. He has also represented Roosevelt Raceway Properties, the Westbury Drive-In, Friends Academy, and Adelphi University in the redevelopment of their properties. Mr. Forchelli also represents Cablevision Systems Corporation in all its land use matters on Long Island.

Mr. Forchelli has served as Counsel to the New York State Assembly, and on the Legal Advisory Board and the Board of Directors of Security Title and Guaranty Company. Mr. Forchelli was selected for inclusion in Who's Who in American Law (8th Ed. 1994-95) as well as "Who's Who in Law" by Long Island Business News. He is a member of the New York State and Nassau County Bar Associations, and a Fellow of the New York Bar Foundation. Mr. Forchelli is also the Vice Chairman of the Nassau County Republican Committee.

Three generations of Forchellis have attended Brooklyn Law School. Mr. Forchelli’s father, Don Forchelli, graduated in 1931; his uncle, Vincent, graduated in 1940; and his cousin, Charles, graduated in 1971. Mr. Forchelli’s daughter, Nicole, is currently a third-year student. Mr. Forchelli’s recognition of the role that the Law School has played in the life of his family prompted him and his wife Sadie to endow a faculty chair in 2003. Professor Neil B. Cohen was named the first Jeffrey D. Forchelli Professor of Law. In 2004, the Forchellis endowed a second chair in honor of Mr. Forchelli’s father, which is held by Professor Lawrence M. Solan. The Forchellis continued their steadfast support of the Law School with their most recent gift to Feil Hall. The Jeffrey D. Forchelli Conference Center, which will be will be the venue of important scholarly symposia, academic programs, and social events, was named in recognition of this extraordinary support.

Mr. Forchelli is involved in many community activities on Long Island. He is a past President of the Oyster Bay-East Norwich School District and a former Trustee of Nassau Community College. He served as President of Community Mainstreaming Associates, an organization that owns and operates group homes for developmentally disabled adults, and in 1996 received the organization’s "Humanitarian of the Year" Award.

Geraldo Rivera, a member of the Brooklyn Law School Class of 1969, is a veteran journalist, whose investigative reporting has garnered him many awards. As a Correspondent at Large for FOX News Channel, he is currently the host of “Geraldo at Large,” a live, investigative news show.

Mr. Rivera joined FOX News Channel in November 2001 as a war correspondent. He was immediately sent to Afghanistan to cover Operation Enduring Freedom. Throughout his career, even before reporters were “embedded” with troops, Mr. Rivera has been on the frontlines of virtually every international conflict. His reporting on Afghanistan was informed by the experience he gained earlier, when he reported on the international drug wars in Pakistan and Afghanistan. He also covered the Chilean coup that resulted in the overthrow of Salvador Allende in October, 1973; the Yom Kippur War, which occurred a month later, and a succession of civil wars in Guatemala, the Philippines, Nicaragua, Columbia, Lebanon, Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo.

Mr. Rivera began his career as a reporter for WABC-TV in New York. He gained national recognition in 1972, when he exposed deplorable conditions at the Willowbrook State School for the mentally ill. His award winning reporting led to a government investigation and eventual shutdown of Willowbrook.

Mr. Rivera became the host of the ABC News magazine program “Goodnight America.” In that capacity, Mr. Rivera presented the first television broadcast of the famous Abraham Zapruder film of the assassination of President John Kennedy. He next became a member of the original cast of ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

Following his work at “Good Morning America,” he began an eight-year association with ABC’s “20/20” as an investigative reporter. In 1987, he began producing and hosting his own program, “The Geraldo Rivera Show,” which ran for 11 years. Beginning in 1998, he hosted a series of investigative specials on NBC.

Mr. Rivera then joined CNBC, where he served as host of its number-one rated prime time show, “Rivera Live.” He received critical acclaim for his coverage of the O.J. Simpson civil trial, which set an all-time CNBC ratings record. He left CNN to join FOX News in 2001.

Mr. Rivera has received more than 170 awards for his work, including the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award, three national and seven local Emmys, and two Columbia-Dupont Awards. He is also the winner of the 2000 Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award (his third) for his NBC News documentary, "Women in Prison," and the Scripps Howard Foundation National Journalism Award for "Back to Bedlam."

Mr. Rivera has been a loyal supporter of Brooklyn Law School. In 1992, he established the Geraldo Rivera Scholarship, which is awarded each year to a student of Hispanic background who shows great promise in the study and practice of law. His most recent demonstration of pride in his law school was his generous contribution to the Residence Hall Fund. Geraldo's café, which is located on the first floor of Feil Hall, was named in recognition of his generosity.
